Once Upon a sunset strip
(Project still in development, 170 logos left to draw)
Identity, History, and people!
A Visual History of the World-Famous Sunset Strip:
From neon dreams to rock ‘n’ roll empires — a visual love letter to 100 years of iconic venue logos that shaped Sunset Boulevard.
This is a tribute to the visionaries of the food and beverage industry—those pioneers who, over the past century, turned dreams into institutions.
The inspiration for this project emerged from the current challenges facing the food and beverage scene in Los Angeles. Our first book, Once Upon a Cocktail – West Hollywood, has been on shelves for just 18 months. Of the 54 venues it celebrated, a staggering 24% have since closed. It’s a sobering reminder of the fragility—and resilience—of this industry.
As a visual historian, Welcome to the Brightside was compelled to explore the legacy of one of LA’s most iconic stretches: the 1.7 miles known as the Sunset Strip. This project captures the essence of 48 legendary bars, restaurants, and hotels through the art of logo design—landmarks etched in memory and myth that have inspired generations. Sometimes, we must look to the past to make sense of the present and the future.
What we’ve uncovered is that we’re simply witnessing another chapter in The Strip’s long story of reinvention. Despite the “For Lease” signs, this project of logos stands as proof that new money, bold ideas, and inspired dreamers will rise again. The Sunset Strip is sacred ground for creatives—and it will thrive once more.
This project is structured in several parts: a broad art series including original works on canvas, a recipe and coloring book, an audio tour, and physical wallpaper. The goal is to draw international attention to The Sunset Strip once more—through press, print, and television—by honoring the past and igniting hope for what’s to come.
